Robots.txt Generator

Build a correctly formatted robots.txt file with crawl rules, sitemap links, and optional AI crawler blocking, without needing to memorise the syntax.

Default rules apply to every crawler

Paths crawlers should not visit or index, such as admin areas, search result pages, or staging folders.
Google ignores this directive entirely. Bing and a few smaller crawlers respect it. Leave blank unless a specific bot is hammering your server.

Tick any crawler you want fully blocked from your entire site. This is separate from search engine indexing, these bots are used to gather training data or answer AI chat queries, not to rank your site in search results.

Upload the downloaded file to the root of your domain so it's reachable at yoursite.com/robots.txt, exactly that address, not inside any subfolder.

Robots.txt is a set of instructions crawlers can choose to respect, not a security or access control mechanism. Never rely on it to hide sensitive content, since the file itself is publicly visible and some bots ignore it entirely. All generation happens locally in your browser.

01Overview

What is a robots.txt file?

A robots.txt file is a plain text file at the root of your website that tells crawlers which parts of the site they may visit. Search engines like Google and Bing check it before crawling, and so do most AI crawlers.

This free robots.txt generator builds a correctly formatted file without you having to memorise the syntax. Set default rules for all bots, list paths to disallow such as admin or checkout pages, add your sitemap, set an optional crawl delay, and block AI crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot and CCBot with a tick.

A single wrong line can block your whole site from Google, so a generator that gets the format right is worth using even if you know the basics.

Quick answer

A robots.txt file lives at yourdomain.com/robots.txt and uses User-agent, Disallow, Allow and Sitemap lines to guide crawlers. Use the generator above to build one, then upload it to your site's root folder or paste it into your SEO plugin's robots.txt editor.

02How to use

How to use the Robots.txt Generator

Start from "allow everything", which is the right default for most websites, and only add the blocks you need.

  1. Enter your website URL

Used to suggest your sitemap address.

  2. Set disallow paths

Add folders crawlers should skip, such as /wp-admin/, /cart/ or internal search results.

  3. Choose AI crawlers to block

Optional. Tick any AI bots you do not want collecting your content.

  4. Copy and upload

Save as robots.txt in your site root, or paste into Yoast or Rank Math's file editor.

03How it works

Robots.txt syntax explained

Rules are grouped by user agent. Crawlers follow the most specific group that matches their name.

robots.txt
User-agent: *
Disallow: /wp-admin/
Allow: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php
Disallow: /cart/

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap_index.xml

Robots.txt controls crawling, not indexing. To keep a page out of Google, use a noindex meta tag and let Google crawl it.

Worked example

A WooCommerce store tidies up its crawl budget.

Blocked
/cart/, /checkout/, /my-account/
Blocked
Filter URLs with ?orderby=
Kept open
Products, categories, blog
Added
Sitemap link
Google spends its crawl time on pages that can rank instead of thousands of filter and cart URLs.

05Tips

Robots.txt best practices

Less is usually more. Most sites need only a few lines.

Do this

  • Keep CSS and JS openGoogle needs to load your styles and scripts to render the page. Blocking them can hurt rankings.
  • Always add your sitemapIt helps every crawler find your important pages quickly.
  • Test before publishingUse the robots.txt report in Search Console to check Google can read the file.
  • Decide on AI crawlers deliberatelyBlocking AI bots protects content but may reduce how often AI tools cite your brand.

Robots.txt mistakes to avoid

  • Disallow: / on a live siteThis single line blocks your whole website. It is often left over from staging.
  • Using robots.txt to hide pagesBlocked pages can still be indexed from links. Use noindex instead.
  • Blocking important resourcesBlocking /wp-content/ or script folders can stop Google rendering pages correctly.
  • Wrong location or nameThe file must be at the root and named exactly robots.txt in lowercase.
06FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Where do I put my robots.txt file?

In the root folder of your domain so it loads at yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Each subdomain needs its own file.

Can robots.txt remove a page from Google?

No. It stops crawling, not indexing. Use a noindex tag, or remove the page and return a 404 or 410, to take it out of results.

How do I block ChatGPT and other AI crawlers?

Add a group for each bot, such as User-agent: GPTBot with Disallow: /. The generator lists the common AI crawlers so you can tick the ones to block.

Does Google respect crawl-delay?

No. Google ignores crawl-delay. Bing and some smaller crawlers respect it.

Do I need a robots.txt file?

It is not required, but it is good practice so you can point to your sitemap and keep crawlers out of low-value areas.

How do I edit robots.txt in WordPress?

Yoast SEO and Rank Math both include a robots.txt editor in their tools settings, so you can paste the generated rules without FTP.
