01Overview

What makes a password strong?

A strong password is long, random and unique to one account. Length matters most: every extra character multiplies the number of guesses an attacker needs. Reusing a password is the biggest risk of all, because one data breach then unlocks every account that shares it.

This free strong password generator creates secure random passwords from 6 to 64 characters. Choose uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols, exclude look-alike characters such as l, 1, I, O and 0, prevent repeated characters, and generate a whole batch at once. A strength meter shows how resistant each password is.

Everything runs locally in your browser using its built-in secure random generator. Nothing is sent to a server or stored.

Quick answer

Use at least 16 random characters mixing uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols, and never reuse a password. Set your options above, generate a password and store it in a password manager.

02How to use

How to use the Password Generator

Generate a new password for every account, then save it in a password manager.

  1. Set the length

16 characters or more is a good default for most accounts.

  2. Choose character types

Mix all four types for the strongest result, or match a site's specific rules.

  3. Generate and check strength

Generate a new password instantly or a whole batch at once.

  4. Copy and save

Paste it into the site and save it in your password manager straight away.

03How it works

Why length beats complexity

Password strength is measured in bits of entropy: how many guesses a brute-force attack would need.

EntropyEntropy (bits) = Length x log2(Character set size) 8 chars, 94 symbols = about 52 bits 16 chars, 94 symbols = about 105 bits 20 chars, lowercase = about 94 bits

Passwords are created with your browser's cryptographically secure random generator. Nothing typed or generated here is sent to any server.

Worked example

Same character set, different lengths.

12 characters

16 characters
Strong
20+ characters
Very strong
Adding length is the simplest way to make a password dramatically harder to crack.

Password security tips

A strong password is one layer. These habits protect you properly.

Do this

  • Use a password managerIt remembers every unique password so you only need one strong master password.
  • Turn on two-factorAn authenticator app or passkey stops most account takeovers even if a password leaks.
  • Never reuse passwordsBreached passwords are tested on other sites within hours.
  • Check for breachesServices like Have I Been Pwned tell you if your email appeared in a known breach.

Password mistakes to avoid

  • Personal informationNames, birthdays and pet names are the first things attackers try.
  • Predictable swapsP@ssw0rd is in every cracking dictionary.
  • Writing passwords in plain notesUse an encrypted password manager instead of notes apps or spreadsheets.
  • Sharing over chat or emailUse your password manager's secure sharing feature.
06FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long should a password be?

At least 16 characters for most accounts, and 20 or more for email and password managers.

Is this password generator safe?

Yes. Passwords are generated locally in your browser using its secure random generator. Nothing is sent anywhere or stored.

What is a strong password example?

Something like k7#Qm2!vRz9@Lp4w: long, random and unique. Do not use examples published online, including this one.

Should I exclude ambiguous characters?

Only if you will need to type the password by hand, such as a Wi-Fi key. It slightly reduces strength.

Are passphrases better than random passwords?

A passphrase of four or more random words is strong and easier to type. Random characters are stronger per character.

Can I generate several passwords at once?

Yes. Use the batch option to create multiple passwords in one click.
