CPM alone tells you nothing about value. A high CPM on a well-targeted audience can easily outperform a cheap CPM on an audience that never converts.

01Overview

What is CPM (cost per thousand impressions)?

CPM stands for cost per mille, the price you pay for 1,000 ad impressions. It is the standard way to price awareness campaigns on Meta, YouTube, TikTok, display networks, programmatic and even podcast and print advertising.

The free CPM calculator above works out your CPM from spend and impressions, how many impressions a budget will buy, or the budget you need for a target reach. You can also convert the result into a second currency at today's exchange rate, useful when you compare platforms or markets.

CPM tells you what attention costs. Pair it with CTR to see what that attention turns into, because a cheap CPM on the wrong audience is still wasted money.

Quick answer

CPM = (total spend ÷ impressions) × 1,000. $600 for 150,000 impressions is a $4.00 CPM. To find impressions from a budget, divide the budget by CPM and multiply by 1,000.

02How to use

How to use the CPM Calculator

Pick what you want to solve and enter any two numbers.

  1. Pick a mode

CPM, impressions from a budget, or budget for a target number of impressions.

  2. Enter two numbers

Use impressions, not reach. Reach counts people, impressions count every time the ad is shown.

  3. Turn on currency conversion

Optional. Compare the same result in a second currency using live rates.

  4. Plan your campaign

Use the impressions figure with an expected CTR to forecast clicks.

03How it works

How CPM is calculated

One formula, rearranged three ways depending on what you know.

The CPM equation
CPM=Ad spendImpressions×1,000
$600 ÷ 150,000 × 1,000 = $4.00
CPM formulasCPM = (Spend / Impressions) x 1,000Impressions = (Budget / CPM) x 1,000Budget = (Impressions / 1,000) x CPM

Effective CPM (eCPM) uses the same formula for campaigns bought on a CPC or CPA basis, so you can compare them on equal terms.

Worked example

A fitness brand plans a two-week Instagram awareness push.

Budget
$2,500
Expected CPM
$7.50
Impressions
333,333
Expected CTR
1%
The budget buys about 333,000 impressions and roughly 3,300 clicks at a 1% CTR.
04Benchmarks

Typical CPM ranges by platform

Rounded ranges for many markets. CPMs swing with season, country and audience, and are highest in Q4 around holiday shopping.

Google Display NetworkWide reach, variable placements
$1 to $5
Meta (Facebook, Instagram)Rises sharply in Nov and Dec
$5 to $15
YouTubeDepends on format and targeting
$4 to $12
TikTokLower in newer markets
$3 to $10
LinkedInPremium B2B audiences
$25 to $60
Connected TVBig screen, non-skippable
$20 to $45
$0$10$20$30$45$60

Narrow audiences cost more per thousand but often waste less, so compare cost per result, not CPM alone.

05Tips

How to get more from every thousand impressions

Cheap reach only helps if the right people see something worth stopping for.

Do this

  • Broaden carefullyVery narrow audiences push CPM up. Test broader targeting and let creative do the filtering.
  • Refresh creative oftenAd fatigue lowers engagement, which raises CPM. Rotate new creative every few weeks.
  • Use frequency capsShowing the same person an ad ten times wastes impressions. Cap frequency on awareness campaigns.
  • Avoid peak weeks if you canQ4 shopping season can double CPMs. Front-load awareness in quieter months.

CPM mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing reach and impressionsReach is unique people. Impressions include repeats. CPM is always based on impressions.
  • Comparing CPM across objectivesA conversion campaign naturally has higher CPM than a reach campaign. Compare like with like.
  • Ignoring viewabilityA cheap impression that is never actually seen has no value. Check viewability on display buys.
  • Judging success by CPMThe goal is results. A higher CPM that drives sales beats a cheap one that does not.
06FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does CPM stand for?

Cost per mille. Mille is Latin for thousand, so CPM is the cost of 1,000 ad impressions.

How do I calculate CPM?

Divide total spend by impressions and multiply by 1,000. $250 for 50,000 impressions is a $5 CPM.

What is a good CPM?

It depends on platform and audience. Display can run under $5, Meta often $5 to $15 and LinkedIn far higher. Judge CPM by the results it drives.

What is the difference between CPM and CPC?

CPM is what you pay per 1,000 impressions. CPC is what you pay per click. Effective CPC equals CPM divided by (CTR x 1,000).

What is eCPM?

Effective CPM. It converts any pricing model into a cost per 1,000 impressions so campaigns can be compared fairly. Publishers also use it to measure ad revenue.

Why are CPMs higher in Q4?

More advertisers compete for the same audiences during the holiday shopping season, which pushes up auction prices.
