What you spent, or plan to spend, on the campaign over the period you are measuring. Use media spend only, not agency fees.
The number of paid clicks over the same period as the spend. Use the platform's click figure, not your analytics sessions, since the two never match exactly.
What you expect to pay per click. Use your recent average from the platform, or your keyword planner estimate if the campaign has not run yet.
Your target number of paid clicks for the period. Work backwards from the enquiries or sales you need rather than picking a round number.

Your economics optional

The share of clicks that turn into a sale or enquiry. If 100 clicks produce 3 sales, enter 3.

There is no universal good CPC. A click that costs ten times more is a bargain if it converts twenty times better, which is exactly what break-even CPC tells you.

Currency for your entered figures defaults to USD and can be changed above with no conversion applied to what you type. Live conversion, when turned on, uses real exchange rates and is shown as an approximate reference, not a guaranteed rate. Rates by ExchangeRate-API, updated once daily. Break-even assumes your conversion rate holds as spend changes, so treat it as a ceiling rather than a target.

01Overview

What is cost per click (CPC)?

Cost per click is the average amount you pay each time someone clicks your ad. It is the main pricing model on Google Ads, Microsoft Ads and many social campaigns, and it decides how much traffic your budget can buy.

The free CPC calculator above solves three problems: your CPC from spend and clicks, the clicks a budget will buy, and the budget you need for a target number of clicks. Add your conversion rate and order value and it also shows your break-even CPC, the most you can pay per click before the campaign starts losing money.

A low CPC is not automatically good. A cheap click that never converts costs more than an expensive click that does, which is why the break-even figure matters more than the average.

Quick answer

CPC = total ad spend ÷ clicks. Spend $1,500 for 600 clicks and your CPC is $2.50. Break-even CPC = order value × profit margin × conversion rate, which tells you the most you can afford to pay per click.

02How to use

How to use the CPC Calculator

Pick what you want to solve, enter any two numbers, and the tool works out the third as you type.

  1. Pick a mode

Cost per click, clicks from a budget, or the budget needed for a target number of clicks.

  2. Enter two numbers

Use media spend only, not agency or management fees, so the CPC reflects what the platform charges.

  3. Add your economics

Conversion rate and average order value reveal break-even CPC, cost per acquisition and return on ad spend.

  4. Compare to your bids

If your actual CPC sits above break-even, tighten targeting or raise conversion rate before you scale spend.

03How it works

How CPC and break-even CPC are calculated

The average CPC tells you what you are paying. Break-even CPC tells you what you can afford.

The CPC equation
CPC=Ad spendClicks
$3,000 ÷ 2,400 = $1.25
Actual CPC vs what you can afford
Your average CPC
$1.25
Break-even CPC
$1.68, the most you can pay
CPC formulasCPC = Total spend / ClicksClicks = Budget / CPCBreak-even CPC = Order value x Margin x Conversion rate

Use gross margin after product and delivery costs. Using revenue instead of profit overstates what you can pay.

Worked example

An online furniture store reviews a Google Shopping campaign.

Spend
$3,000
Clicks
2,400
Average CPC
$1.25
Order value x margin
$320 x 35%
Conversion rate
1.5%
Break-even CPC is $1.68. At $1.25 the campaign is profitable, with about $0.43 of headroom per click.

What pushes CPC up or down

CPC is set by auction, so it moves with competition and with how relevant the platform thinks your ad is.

05Tips

How to lower your cost per click

You rarely win by simply bidding less. You win by being more relevant than the advertisers around you.

Do this

  • Improve Quality ScoreGroup a few closely related keywords per ad group and write ads that repeat them. Relevance is rewarded with cheaper clicks.
  • Add negative keywordsSearch terms reports reveal paid clicks for things you do not sell. Blocking them cuts waste immediately.
  • Go long tail"Emergency electrician Dubai Marina" costs less and converts better than "electrician".
  • Schedule and geo-targetPause ads when you cannot answer the phone and focus on locations that actually buy.

CPC mistakes to avoid

  • Optimising for cheapest clicksLow CPC traffic from broad audiences often never converts. Optimise for cost per acquisition.
  • Including agency feesFees inflate CPC and make platform comparisons unfair. Track them separately.
  • Using revenue as marginBreak-even must use profit, otherwise you will scale campaigns that lose money.
  • Ignoring conversion rateA 1 percentage point lift in conversion rate raises break-even CPC more than most bid tweaks.
06FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a good CPC?

Any CPC below your break-even CPC is profitable. Averages range from well under $1 in low-competition niches to $10 or more in legal, finance and insurance. Your own margin decides what is good for you.

How is CPC calculated?

Divide total ad spend by the number of clicks. $800 spend and 400 clicks gives a $2.00 CPC.

What is break-even CPC?

The highest amount you can pay for a click without losing money. It equals order value times profit margin times conversion rate.

Is CPC the same as bid?

No. Your bid is the maximum you are willing to pay. Your actual CPC is what the auction charges, which is usually lower than the bid.

Why did my CPC suddenly increase?

Usually new competitors, seasonal demand, a drop in ad relevance or a switch to an automated bid strategy. Check auction insights first.

Can I use other currencies?

Yes. Choose your currency in the tool and every figure updates.
